Startin a garden
Mar 3rd, 2010, 9:19pm

Ok I usually buy my vegetables plants but this year I'm gonna start from seed.
Up here, over here or down here depending on which way your lookin to my area, should I start my tomatoe seeds and pepper seeds?

I'll start with that for this year and see how it goes, the rest I'll buy.

I start my pepper plants 10 weeks before I intend to plant them in the garden, my tomatoes get stated 8 weeks before I want to set them out. Once they have sprouted they need lots of light or they will get too leggy (tall and spindly) A green house or cold frame works well.

Big Guy has the answer.I also have what I call a hot box.It is temp controlled with heat trace, thermostatically controlled, and grow lights.Another important thing is to add humidity which can be done simply by keeping a bowl of water in your enclosure.Keep the light source within two inches of the tops of your plants to keep them from growing straight up and becoming spindly.Another important thing is never to let the soil in your planters dry out, this takes considerable attention. If left to get to dry this will put the starts into distress and shock which will inhibit proper growth and overall health of the plant. On the other hand, don't drown the little babies, just keep the soil good and moist.Basically what you are trying to do is to create a tropical rain forest environment in a box.I built mine out of plywood with a clear plastic sheeting cover with a frame. You need to allow for fresh air to circulate within your rain forest but not at the expense of proper heat and humidity. If you can achieve these conditions you will be amazed at the progress of your plants.

You got that right Scotty  Smiley

This is all great info thanks. I don't know much about cold frame designs, but I did some investigating on the net and have a really good idea, so I'm going to give it a shot and we'll see I do.

I'm going to build two boxes about 32"w x 32"d x 14" h ..... table style, if you know what I mean?

So if that sounds good tomorrow I'm startin.

I figure I'm going to transplant to the garden .... hmmmm, 1st weekend in May?

Ohhh brother, I should of kept my mouth shut. I told my wife I was going to be making the cold frames and guess what?
She had a better idea..... now I've been moving all the upstairs furniture to the first floor, cuz she hired a floor guy to finish the wood floors, and a painter to paint.

I fixed her.... I'm not lying when I say the bed and a big desk are in a pile in the back yard.
I figured, she can buy a new bed and desk .... have them delivered and put back up stair by the delivery guys....... the rest is all small stuff.
But man I made about a hundred trips up and down those stairs today.

She also doesn't know I'm lookin at a new smoker...... Smiley
